HASKALLAH represents the
Jewish Communities of the Czech Republic. After one of the most troublesome
periods of history Jewish culture, religious practice and Jewish life is
re-emerging and growing steadily in commitment and strength. Many of these
Communities are small and by no means are all of them in Prague.
There are many needs which
include the refurbishment of buildings for use as synagogues,community
centres and for a focus for the many different aspects of Jewish life.
Needs include re-stocking of prayer books and books instructing in the
Jewish faith those who are making contact with their Jewish roots.
All of these requirements
in these exciting times in a country still developing its post-Communist
economic structure and awaiting Membership of the European Union have been
magnified by the terrible floods which Prague and many other areas of the
Czech Republic have experienced in August 2002. These have caused significant
damage to both property and contents in buildings used by Jews - synagogues,
community centres, restaurants and many which have been used for the communities
in the past and which have been preserved to show the world the Jewish
heritage that exists here.
